Safe Summer Survival

You may have seen us around the beaches and malls

Safe Summer Survival (aka as SSS) is a peer education project to help young people stay safe when they are out and about.  We might have approached you at the beach, at a mall, at an underage dance event like BLYMP or Blitz in Bondi, or even Submission at Home Night club.

Do you remember being handed a Health Pack with some condoms and lube, a lollipop and two great pocket sized fold out cards "The Little Black Book" and "Not So Fun Park"? Then yes, you have come into contact with the SSS team.

Stay in touch to find out where we will be in the SUMMER months.

Other important info and news will also be posted here, like upcoming events for young people, and some interesting facts you may not have known.

The Team

We have been employing young people as peer educators for eight years now and they know heaps about Safe Sex, Sexuality, Drugs and Alcohol and other health issues that effect young people. So if you wanna know anything about us or want to find out how to become a peer educator check out the website during September for more information about how to apply.

Coordination

The Safe Summer Survival Project is coordinated  by a Steering Committee made up of representatives from the following agencies:  WAYS Youth Services, The Shack Youth Services; City of Sydney Council; Woollahra Council; Waverley Council; Randwick City Council; City of Botany Bay Council; HIV/AIDS and Related Programs Unit (SESIAHS); Sydney Sexual Health Centre (SESIAHS); Kirketon Road Centre (SESIAHS); and the Eastern Sydney Division for General Practitioners.

Research

Every year the team collects information from young people using a survey, which asks questions around their sexual experience and alcohol and other drug experiences. These surveys are shown to young people during outreach, they are asked whether they would like to fill one out and given an explanation as to why we ask these questions and why the information we get from them is so important. Surveys are conducted every year and analysed every two years  by the HARP unit (NSW Health).

The information collected is from two seperate peer education teams Summer Survival (Shire Wide Youth Services and Safe Summer Survival (WAYS Youth Services).
