POEM
What is POEM?
POEM at WAYS is recognised as a special assistance school by the NSW Department of Education & Training offering an education programme for young people aged 13 to 19 who have become disconnected from mainstream education.
POEM’s goal is to re-engage students into mainstream education. This is achieved by providing a supportive, adventurous and flexible learning environment that helps young people addresses the barriers to learning and education. POEM has maximum number of 15 students at any one time, ensuring each student receives individualized instruction and support.
- Students work on individual learning plans designed to address individual needs, abilities and interests. Goals are regularly re-evaluated and negotiated with the teaching staff. The curriculum is primarily focused on improving numeracy and literacy skills.
- Students receive a formally accredited education with the aim of developing pathways to enable the students to achieve their long term goals. This will include mainstream education, TAFE and trade based courses or training. For example the students can currently be enrolled in TAFE under the Preparation for Work and Study course. The Preparation for Work and Study (PWS) course is an accredited year 9 equivalent course. When students have completed the PWS course they can continue their studies at mainstream schools, TAFE, other educational settings, find employment, or undertake an apprenticeship with ongoing support from WAYS.
